Pitru Rituals

Kalasha also spelled as Kalasham is a sacred symbol in Hindu tradition. According to the Vedas, the Purna-Kalasha symbolizes “source of life” and it is found in every Hindu religious ceremony embodying Lord Ganesha (pratham pujya) or his mother Gauri or the goddess Lakshmi.

Mangal Kalasha and its Importance

It is being said that when Lord Vishnu was leaning on the snake-bed, lotus emerged from the navel and there appeared Lord Brahma. Kalasham was produced during the swirling of the ocean and thus, Lord Vishnu held Kalasham and filled it with amrutham. It is believed that all the deities were inside the Kalasham and so, it has religious importance in Hindu rituals

Kalasham is the traditional arrangement of a metal pot filled with water, a coronet of 5, 7, or 11 mango leaves, and the coconut on the top. This Purna-Kalasha is worshipped in every Hindu ceremony right from Griha Pravesha to Laxmi havan and daily Ganapati puja in Varanasi and at home.

The water in the Kalasham depicts purity and thus, the water is sprinkled in the home after performing traditional ritual or pooja. It represents the presence of divine energy and gifts you spiritual strength and intellect to lead your life.

“The holy spiritual Kalasham worshipped in every puja signifies one’s balanced life. The mango leaves coronated on the kalasham represent the forms of life and coconut on top, represent endless cycle”.
